PROJECT 1A - SOUND DUBBING

For this task, I was given a muted clip from Everything Everywhere All At Once and had to dub all the audio myself, including voice acting and sound effects.

I started by looking up the original version of the scene to use as a reference so I could better understand the timing, emotions, and sounds needed. Once I had a rough idea, I began adding sound effects that I found online. This was done together in a group to streamline the process. We used google sheet to share our findings together.

I used the Effect Controls in Premiere Pro to tweak the volume and presence of each sound, adjusting them so they matched the actions and movements in the video accurately.

After that, I recorded multiple takes of my own voice using my phone’s voice recorder while wearing headphones to make sure the audio came out clean and balanced.

Raw voice lines Drive

I voiced all the characters myself, Evelyn (the wife), Raymond (the husband), the accountant boss, and the alternate version of the husband, then used pitch shifter effects to make each voice sound distinct. For Evelyn, I raised the pitch slightly, and for the accountant boss, I raised it even more to make her sound sharper. For both versions of the husband, I lowered the pitch to create a deeper tone.

Once all the voices and effects were in place, I listened back several times and made small adjustments, like syncing the voice lines more accurately or fixing volumes, to make sure everything felt smooth and believable. After a few rounds of fine-tuning, I ended up with a final version I was really satisfied with.

PROJECT 1B - SOUND SHAPING

On week 8, we had an online class session where Mr. Martin taught us how to use Adobe Audition in preparation for us to begin our work on project 1, which consists of audio editing. On the previous week, we were already briefed on what we needed to prepare to be able to begin this task, which includes a 10 seconds recording of our voice speaking in our first language. In my case, I would be recording in Indonesian. The project requires 4 different audio edit result, which are:

  1. voice of a phone call
  2. voice coming from inside of a closet (muffled voice)
  3. voice in an underground cave
  4. Alien/Orc voice.

The task workflow is explained during the online session as well as provided in the slides that was uploaded on Teams. Mr. Martin gave us a thorough step by step explanation on how to edit and shape our recorded audio with various effects and tools, and it was quite easy to follow despite being only an online meeting.

When I try to figure out how the system works. It was quite fun to listen to the difference I have made after every adjustments that are made when compared to the original unedited audio.

PHONE CALL SOUND EFFECT

To edit the audio to make it sound like its a phone call, I used the parametic equalizer tool to adjust the bass, treble and mid range.

MUFFLED SOUND EFFECT

For the muffled effect, I want it to sound like its someone talking from inside of a closet. For this, I also used the parametic equalizer tool but the positions of the treble and mid range are different from the previous one.

REVERB SOUND EFFECT

For a reverb effect, it is meant to sound like a person talking in a spacious underground cave that has great echo all around, which is caused by sound waves reflecting from a surface. To achieve this, I applied reverb in the rack effect and used one of the presets which is "bigger room ambience", then I adjusted the characteristics and output level.

ALIEN SOUND EFFECT

For the alien sound effect, I used two different sound settings. One is using pitch shifter, and another is with a phaser. On the pitch shifter, I used one of the available presets, which is called "the dark lord", and then adjusted the semi-tones and cents to fit the desired outcome.
