Digital Photography and Imaging / Bachelor’s of Design (Honours) in Creative Media / Taylor’s University

 Description:

This task requires you to assess, investigate, document and analyse the existing art/design work you selected in Task 1. You will study the design principles found in that work, as well as the size, placement, purpose, effectiveness of the design

Requirements:

In your Task 2 Visual Analysis & Ideation post in the blog,

1. Recap Task 2 brief.

2. Write a 300- to 350-word visual analysis of the artwork you selected from the art gallery. Refer to Visual Analysis lecture notes and guide to write the visual analysis.

3. Next, using your design principles knowledge, sketch 3 ideas on how the selected design can be improved. Describe each idea and support it with a rationale in about 30-50 words. You may include some visual references (cite the sources) that inspire your own ideas. Plagiarism in any way (p. 13 of MIB) will result in an F grade for the overall module and the student will be subjected to the policies of the University concerning academic misconduct. You shall also adhere to the guidelines and expectations for the responsible use of GenAI.

4.Feedback from the lecturer

Brief Summary Task 1

Gestalt theory is an idea that explains how people see and organize visual information. It suggests that our brains naturally group objects together to make sense of what we see. Instead of looking at individual parts, we see things as whole patterns or structures.

The Fantastic Mr. Fox criterion collection cover art was my chosen illustration for me to analyze for the task 1 exercise. I have explored several application of the gestalt theory that appears within this illustration.

TASK 2: VISUAL ANALYSIS & IDEATION

In this illustration, it can be seen that there are several points that are very substantial for the composition. It is evident that this artwork is very pleasing to look at, this is because various elements from gestalt principles are applied into this that blends seamlessly into one beautiful scenery.

The cover art effectively applies Gestalt principles to create a visually engaging composition. Emphasis is placed on Mr. Fox at the center, highlighting his role as the main character through his confident demeanor and raised glass, symbolizing hierarchy. Contrast is achieved with lighting that separates characters, while movement is guided by the positioning of figures, leading the viewer’s eye naturally toward Mr. Fox. Repetition of warm, autumnal colors enhances unity, and balance is maintained through a symmetrical arrangement. The placement of the title text integrates seamlessly with the illustration, framed by elements that enhance its visual harmony.

However, for this task, we are asked to use our design principles knowledge, and sketch 3 ideas on how the selected design can be improved. Personally I feel like this illustration is already very well designed, which might become a challenge to improve.

SKETCHES

Sketch 1
On this sketch, I followed Mr. Fauzi’s feedback on taking on a new concept on the poster by changing it into a circular icon. I also changed the perspective into a fish eye lens to create dimension instead of creating a normal circle logo.

Sketch 2

On the second sketch, I created an upper level that shows the situation of the setting more clearly. Creating a better narrative for the story telling in one image. It shows how they are struggling from all the humans at the true surface but hiding away from reality at the bottom.

Sketch 3

On the third sketch, i cropped the poster into a square shape, and changed the lighting to focus more on the main character instead of having the light illuminating from the table.
